News Story: Japan seeks minister-level meeting with India on defense


Japan plans to upgrade the level of a meeting between Japanese and Indian officials in November to finalize military cooperation between the two countries aimed at resisting their mutual rival China, reports our Chinese-language sister paper Want Daily.

Unnamed Japanese government sources said Tokyo plans to upgrade the level of defense and diplomatic officials participating in the talks with India from vice minister to minister. Prime Minster Shinzo Abe is also seeking to reach agreement an with his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi to enhance military cooperation when they met on Sept. 1.

It would be a diplomatic breakthrough for Japan if a minister-level meeting were held. India and Japan conducted their first vice minister-level meeting in New Delhi in July 2010 and held a second in Tokyo in October 2012.
