China and Russia have been negotiating the technological blueprint of Amur class submarines, although there are no concrete plans to sign a cooperation agreement over the joint building of the vessels, reports the party-run People's Daily.
Chinese military expert Song Xiaojun said the countries can bring complementary strengths to the joint project.
The Amur-class submarine (named for the Amur river on the border between the two countries) is one of the latest Russian submarine designs. It is advertised as an export version of the Lada class, a modernized version of the Kilo-class submarine with improved acoustic stealth, new combat systems, and an option for air-independent propulsion (AIP). The new vessels are the fourth generation of the Kilo submarine family, with two models developed.
