YOKOSUKA, Kanagawa -- Eight members of two citizens' organizations staged a demonstration here on May 1 to protest Japan's dispatch of a Maritime Self-Defense Force (MSDF) vessel to guard a U.S. Navy supply ship in the Pacific Ocean.

The eight people representing Yokosuka Heiwa Sendan (Yokosuka Peace Convoy) and Peace Link Hiroshima-Kure-Iwakuni held the rally at Verny Park in Yokosuka, Kanagawa Prefecture.

As the MSDF helicopter carrier Izumo left the force's Yokosuka base at around 10 a.m. on May 1, the eight protesters held up placards and a banner with such messages as "Guarding a U.S. vessel destroys Japan's purely defense-only policy."
